Hello Bloggers

Flax weaving has been around for a very long time in New Zealand. Flax has been used to make baskets, mats, hats, ect. Its even used today by some people.
At my school my teacher Whaea Morag taught us how to weave with Flax. she taught us how to weave a mat.

I am very interested in weaving because I love art and this is a form of art.  I love it that you can use Flax which is easily found here in New Zealand around us to create amazing and useful things with.  I have a great interest in creativity so by just playing around with it trying to weave different shapes with Flax you might discover something new and come up with your own ideas for making amazing things.

Let me know if anyone has weaved anything with Flax.
bye

  1. Talofa Marwah,

You are right, weaving is definitely a form of art! I really like how you described your interest in expressing your creativity through flax weaving, it's just one of the many amazing things there are to try in our world. Maybe next time you could talk about what you would like to weave out of your flax. Is there anything you’d like to make? It may help to think about who you'd like to make it for...

I would love to weave more often, I have weaved with plastic and flax before and it takes a lot of patience. One day I want to weave a fala (mat) for my family, we used to have lots in our house but not so much now. I would also love to weave my Mum, sisters and niece an Ili (fan), my Grandparents had so many beautiful ili that had the most vibrant colours.

    Toe feiloa'i fo'i,

    Cia.
